| Nuclear Weapons: Help Create a Nuclear Free World |

Thanks to your efforts, the Bush administration has faced staunch opposition to its plans to create a new generation of nuclear weapons. The nuclear bunker-buster was resoundingly defeated in 2005 and 2006. The Reliable Replacement Warhead, a surreptitious attempt to build a new nuclear weapon, is on its last legs, and we are continuing our work to ensure its defeat. As we celebrate our victories, we must use them as a springboard toward our larger goal: a nuclear-free world. This notion got a surprising boost earlier this year when a group including Henry Kissinger and George Shultz published an Op-Ed calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Many of the Democratic presidential candidates, from John Edwards to Barack Obama to Bill Richardson, are campaigning on the vision of using US leadership to make a nuclear-free world a reality. This year also provides an opportunity for members of Congress to take leadership on this critical issue. We must push Congress to ensure progress towards this vision. Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE) have offered a bill that provides a comprehensive plan for stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and reducing current global stockpiles. It includes important steps such as upholding US obligations under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, ratifying the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and strengthening the capabilities of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Click here to write your senators and ask them to cosponsor this critical bill. Thank you for helping us work toward a nuclear-free world. |
